Promoting Polish apples in Taiwan

On 29 April this year, the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR), together with the Polish Office in Taipei and the Foreign Trade Office of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency in Taipei, organised the promotion of Polish apples in Taiwan under the name “Polish Apple Night”.

The Taiwanese guests had the opportunity to taste fresh apples shipped from Poland specifically for this occasion by fruit-growing companies licenced to export to Taiwan. The event was attended by around 50 people who represented state institutions, import companies, industry associations and retail networks, as well as trade media.

Polish apples received approval for the Taiwanese market at the end of 2019. Currently, the list approved by the Taiwanese Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) includes 15 apple-growing companies from Poland. However, no apples have yet been exported from Poland to Taiwan. The “Polish Apple Night” promotion was attended by 5 apple producers from Poland.

”Polish Apple Night” was preceded on 26 April by an online information meeting about the apple market in Taiwan, organised in cooperation with the Foreign Trade Office in Taipei with the participation of Taiwanese experts. The Taiwanese market holds a lot of promise but it is also very challenging. Because of  Taiwan’s climate, most apples available in the market are imported, mainly from the USA, Chile, New Zealand and Japan. Popular varieties are Gala and Fuji. Apples are a popular fruit, treated as dessert and often given as a present. The annual consumption of apples is about 6-7 kg per person.

As a follow-up to “Polish Apple Night”, an online B2B discussion session was organised on 4-7 May between apple-growing companies from Poland and Taiwanese importers.
